Designed to meet the needs of professional actors and theater students who seek an introduction to Shakespeare & Company's training methods as well as alumni who wish to refresh and reconnect with the work, the Weekend Intensive integrates voice, movement, and monologue work. Participants explore ways to unlock the emotional and intellectual content inherent in Shakespeare's language, yielding a direct relationship between actor and text.
Weekend Intensives are most often held in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle and at Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, MA.
Friday (7pm-10pm) is an introduction to Shakespeare & Company’s aesthetic and an opportunity for the actors to shift gears and focus on their work through a series of exercises involving voice, body and memory work.
Saturday (10am-10pm) focuses on the actor’s individual voice and experiences, which are incorporated into a monologue that the actor has prepared for the class.
Sunday (10am-4pm) moves more vigorously through the voice and body work, with the actors reconnecting with Shakespeare’s text, revisiting their monologues and exploring how the structure of the verse might influence character and performance.
Adequate time for meal breaks is given, though participants are responsible for their own meals.
The workshops are limited to 14 participants.
Minimum age requirement is 18 years old.
San Jose, CA - September 30 to October 2, 2022
Lenox, MA - October 21 to 23, 2022 (For this workshop, we have housing available on campus in the dorm for $40 per night)
Raleigh/Chapel Hill, NC - November 11 to 13, 2022
New York, NY - December 2 to 4, 2022
All workshop participants and staff must be vaccinated against COVID-19 (including a booster shot), and will be tested on the first day of the workshop. Masks are not currently required, but this is subject to change depending on the recommendation of our COVID Safety Officer.
As conditions of the global pandemic are ever-evolving, these guidelines are subject to change and will be updated accordingly. These guidelines are consistent with and/or exceed current Board of Health and State Orders at this time, and we may continue to establish stricter policies based on local conditions and Actors’ Equity Association guidelines. We thank you for your patience, communication, and cooperation.
Take the opportunity to refresh your craft and reconnect with the work. Actors who have completed our Month-Long Intensive, Summer Shakespeare Intensive (formerly the Summer Training Institute), or Conservatory programs are eligible for a 15% discount off the Weekend Intensive tuition.

Everyone always asks about it when they see it on my resume and I love waxing poetically about it! Not only that, friendships that I made during my weekend have been long-lasting, I love running into folks at auditions and have coffee with folks in the city and one friend even helped to book me in my first fully compensated theater job! Those three days were successful in so many ways I hadn’t even planned on!
I attend at least one workshop at Shakespeare & Company each year as it always allows me an opportunity to grow as actor, to continue to free my actor’s instrument, to meet exciting new artists from around the world, and to spend time in an environment I love, with a faculty whom I deeply respect. moreI attend at least one workshop at Shakespeare & Company each year as it always allows me an opportunity to grow as actor, to continue to free my actor’s instrument, to meet exciting new artists from around the world, and to spend time in an environment I love, with a faculty whom I deeply respect.
