Shakespeare & Company operates year-round in the Berkshires, scheduling hundreds of performances on indoor and outdoor stages; hosting scores of workshops, multiple lectures, and demonstrations, and delivering thousands of classes for professional and aspiring actors, teachers, and directors.
Shakespeare & Company has reimagined its legacy of outdoor performances with the creation of a 500-seat, terraced amphitheater on the sprawling Kemble Street campus it has called home since 2000. Set underneath towering spruce trees, the picturesque performance space features comfortable canvas seating, beckoning all to relax and enjoy everything the stage has to offer. The theater is wheelchair accessible.
Inspired by Shakespeare's theaters, where everybody was close to the action, the air-conditioned, scaffold-and-canvas Tina Packer Playhouse positions audiences in the round, on all sides of the stage on two levels. With box seats and comfortable, cushion-backed benches, the Playhouse seats more than 400. Amenities include an indoor bar and lobby, concessions, and restrooms. The theater is wheelchair accessible.
This versatile and intimate stage space is 70 feet by 35 feet and seats 200, with four distinct, seating configurations for stage presentations and events. The space is highly adaptable and flexible, depending on the creative needs of our performances and event. Amenities include an indoor bar and lobby, concessions, and restrooms. The theater is wheelchair accessible.
The Roman Garden Theatre is a unique, 280-seat outdoor venue with comfortable seating and a delightful casual ambiance. Seating is in the round.
Shakespeare has always been closely linked with the outdoors. In Elizabethan times, the Bard's plays were performed in the open-roofed Globe Theatre. Outdoor Shakespeare performances immerse audiences in the "natural world," a landscape that offers an escape from conventional society, a theme integral to the Bard's plays.
The Roman Garden Theatre is generously supported by The Dr. Gerald and Roberta Friedman Foundation.
Our tented, outdoor theater is a reconstruction of the first level of Shakespeare’s first London theater, the Rose Playhouse. Situated in the beautiful Rose Meadow, the Rose Footprint features bleacher seating and removable “groundling” seating for up to 250, with restrooms nearby in Josie’s Place Cafe.
Three state-of-the-art theatrical studios, located in the Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre, double as performance spaces. Each room is equipped with lighting grids (at 15′ 9½”) with 400 amp stage lighting. Sprung floors are on neoprene pads, which make the airy rooms particularly suitable for dance, yoga, and other physical movement.
