Shakespeare & Company Earns Nine Broadway World Awards

Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey and The Chairs Lauded for Theater Excellence in 2021

LENOX, Mass. – Two Shakespeare & Company productions have earned Broadway World – Berkshires Awards for 2021: the one-woman theatrical drama Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey by Debra Ann Byrd, and The Chairs by Eugéne Ionesco.

Becoming Othello was staged in summer 2021 at Shakespeare & Company’s outdoor Roman Garden Theatre, starring Byrd and directed by the Company’s Founding Artistic Director Tina Packer. The production earned eight awards, including Best Production of the Year (in-person), Best Play, Best Performer (Byrd) and Best Direction of a Play (Packer).

The Chairs, directed by James Warwick and featuring Malcolm Ingram and Barbara Sims, appeared at the Tina Packer Playhouse in Fall 2021 and was named the year’s Most Anticipated Upcoming Production of a Play.
