Shakespeare & Company Garners 26 BroadwayWorld Berkshires Nominations

LENOX, Mass. – The nominations for the 2021 BroadwayWorld Berkshires Awards are out, and Shakespeare & Company has earned 26 nods toward productions staged from October, 2020 through September, 2021.

The theater-company’s productions of King Lear; Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey; Art; hang, and The Chairs have each been recognized in a range of categories, including Best Performer in a Play, Best Direction of a Play, Best Costume Design, and Best Production of the Year.

2021 also welcomed construction of the New Spruce Theatre, a 500-seat outdoor amphitheater christened by a sold-out run of King Lear, starring Christopher Lloyd (Taxi, Back to the Future). Lloyd earned a nomination in the Best Performer in a Play category for his performance, along with fellow Lear actors Bryce Michael Wood, Jennie M. Jadow, and MaConnia Chesser.

Cloteal L. Horne, who starred in Shakespeare & Company’s production of hang by debbie tucker green, and Debra Ann Byrd, writer and star of the one-woman play Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey, have also been recognized in the same category.

The BroadwayWorld Regional Awards are the largest theater-audience awards worldwide, with more than 100 cities participating. Voting is open now through December 31, and winners will be announced in January.

Shakespeare & Company artists and productions have been nominated in the following categories:

Best Performer in a Play – Christopher Lloyd, King Lear; Cloteal L. Horne, hang; Debra Ann Byrd, Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey; Bryce Michael Wood, Jennie M. Jadow, and MaConnia Chesser, all King Lear.

Best Choreography of a Play or Musical – Dyane Harvey, Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey

Best Direction of a Play – Nicole Ricciardi, King Lear; Regge Life, hang; Tina Packer, Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey

Best Costume Design – Gail Cooper-Hecht, Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey; Govane Lohbauer, King Lear

Best Sound Design – David D. Wright, Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey

Best Production of the Year – ArtBecoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journeyhang, and King Lear.

Most Anticipated Upcoming Production of a Play – The Chairs

Best Supporting Performance in a Play – Nigel Gore, MaConnia Chesser, Bryce Michael Wood, and Jennie M. Jadow, all King Lear.

Best Sound Design of a Play or Musical – Amy Altadonna, King Lear.

Best Scenic Design of a Play or Musical – Patrick Brennan, hang
