Salary: $1,442 to $1,923 per week ($75k-$100k annually)

Shakespeare & Company seeks an organized, hands-on and motivated individual to be our Development Director beginning January 1, 2023. Supervision of staff; board stewardship; creating and managing annual fundraising campaigns; major gift and capital campaign solicitation; government, foundation, business, individual and new funding source coordination; managing cultivation and member events; budgeting, analyzing and reporting on capital and annual campaign activities.

The ideal candidate will have strong communication and people management skills with experience in creating and managing a culturally diverse team environment. The successful candidate will also be a team player with a strong antiracist perspective and be a strategic, flexible, positive and curious thinker responsible for creating, implementing, and measuring a successful and comprehensive fundraising program strategy for the support of Shakespeare & Company Performances, Education Programs, and Center for Actor Training on a local, national, and international scale.


  • Manages day-to-day operation of development office and supervises staff;
  • Strategizes, plans and implements annual and capital fundraising campaigns;
  • Creates and manages income and expense budget for department;
  • Provides regular fundraising reports (across all areas of contributed income), analysis, and recommendations to Board of Trustees and Development Committee;
  • Provides all contributed income reports and documentation to Finance Department;
  • Works with Managing Director and Artistic leadership to secure major gifts from current donors/prospects and new funding sources;
  • Oversees annual fundraising efforts, including membership mailings, renewal and lapsed letters, ticket buyer appeals, outreach and stewardship;
  • Responsible for identifying, soliciting and stewarding individual donors;
  • Engages and cultivates major donors and board prospects;
  • Oversees all cultivation and member events;
  • Oversees acknowledgment process of donors and all donor related activities;
  • Oversees donor Playbill listings and other donor recognition for season and productions;
  • Oversees Annual Gala and other fundraising events, and liaises with Board Gala Committee;
  • Directs Capital and other special campaign efforts and reporting, especially upcoming 50th Season;
  • Serve as liaison to the Board of Directors, including Development and Governance Committees;
  • Serves as Stewardship and Board Liaison, including working with Board members on identifying and cultivating new donors;
  • Oversees logistics of quarterly Board meetings and monthly Development Committee Meetings.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; a positive attitude and energy, and an inspiring, forward thinking, empathetic, and collaborative leadership style, exhibiting an openness to many perspectives;
  • Budget management experience;
  • Completion of a COVID-19 vaccine regimen and booster, if eligible;
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Strong organizational and communication skills;
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft office proficiency, familiarity with Raiser’s Edge preferred;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects;

  • Interest and respect for the foundational principles and methods in Shakespeare & Company’s commitment to the actor/audience relationship;
  • Demonstrated experience in a fast-paced, high-transaction performing or other arts environment.


This full-time Exempt position will receive compensation in the range of $75,000 to $100,000 annually. Benefits include paid time off, health insurance options including 75% contribution towards individual's health insurance, 403(b) with TIAA-CREF including a company match after 2 year's employment, medical FSA, and discounts on company programs. Local housing can be provided for up to 60 days as part of a relocation package.
