Plot Summary

Theseus, Duke of Athens, and his betrothed, Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, await their wedding day. Egeus, father to Hermia, comes before the Duke because he wants his daughter Hermia to marry Demetrius, though she wants to marry Lysander. Egeus asks the Duke to enact the ancient law of Athens; that his daughter must marry Demetrius, or be put to death, or be sent to a nunnery. Lysander and Hermia vow to run away into the Athenian wood to secretly marry. Helena, friend to Hermia and Lysander, finds out about this plan and tells Demetrius, the man she loves, to try to win his favor.

Meanwhile, a group of rag-tag workers, the “rude mechanicals,” begin rehearsals of a play to be performed at the Duke’s Wedding. They decide to rehearse in the Athenian wood, so that no one will see their play before the performance. Chaos reigns in the wood, as the King and Queen of the Fairies, Titania and Oberon, are fighting over a changeling boy. Oberon vows to trick Titania in order to get the boy, and sends Puck to get a flower with magical powers. This flower will make Titania fall in love with whatever she sees when she wakes up – which turns out to be one of the mechanicals, Bottom, to whom Puck gives an ass’ head. Oberon instructs Puck to use the magical flower on the young lovers as well. Puck mistakes Lysander for Demetrius, and confusion ensues within the teenagers. All is eventually resolved, and the play culminates in the “rude mechanicals’” performance at the Duke’s wedding. The Duke and Hippolyta are joined by Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius and Helena, and all three couples are happily married.
