Plot Summary

As the play begins, the soldiers led by Don Pedro, Prince of Arragon are returning from war. We learn that Beatrice, a niece of Leonato (at whose home the play takes place), has a rivalry with Benedick, a soldier in the war and confirmed bachelor. When the soldiers arrive, Claudio, a young soldier and friend of Benedick’s, falls instantly in love with Leonato’s daughter Hero.

Don Pedro offers to woo Hero in Claudio’s name while in disguise at a masquerade ball to be held that night. Don John, Pedro’s discontented bastard brother, decides to attempt to foil the plot by planting false truths in Claudio’s ear—but fails. Claudio and Hero are engaged to be married. The revelers agree that Benedick and Beatrice would make a perfect match, and plot to trick the pair into falling in love with each other.

Meanwhile, Don John attempts another plot to break up the marriage, with the help of his friends, by convincing Claudio that Hero has been unfaithful to him, in the hopes that he will break off the marriage and shame her in public. He succeeds.

But a group of bumbling members of the Watch, led by Dogberry, manage to capture the villains and reveal their plot to Leonato — who have been pretending that Hero is dead in order to guilt Don Pedro and Claudio into remorse.

Leonato forgives Claudio and asks him to agree to marry his “niece”, the daughter of his sister Antonia, to repent. He agrees, and it turns out that this “other Hero” is his supposed-dead love. The play ends with Beatrice and Benedick confessing their love for each other and agreeing to marry.
