From its founding Shakespeare & Company has sought ways to help teachers and students encountering the plays to experience a more personal and immediate connection to the words. After more than 20 years bringing Shakespeare into classrooms from 4th to 12th grade, our education artists have learned a great deal about how young people learn and what stimulates their creativity.
In all of the Company’s education activities, creating a profound, multi-level learning experience is paramount. The way for students to really grasp Shakespeare is to get up and do it. When students perform Shakespeare, they experience the story, identify with the characters and take ownership of the language. This difficult material, once foreign to them, becomes engaging, personally meaningful and inspiring.
Shakespeare & Company’s teaching artists operate from a model of “directing by asking questions” which gives the student/actors authority and ownership. Embracing the subjective or interpretive nature of performance not only illustrates the plasticity of interpretation, but also fosters greater student engagement and investment.
We hope these resources will help you as you’re teaching Shakespeare to your students. Need more? Get more information about Shakespeare & Company’s education methodologies.
