Prince Hamlet returns home to Denmark from Wittenberg University for his father’s funeral and finds that his mother has married his uncle Claudius who has now assumed the throne. Hamlet and his friend Horatio encounter the Ghost of Hamlet’s father who tells them that he was murdered by Claudius and asks Hamlet to avenge his murder. Hamlet is unsure whether the ghost is real or sent from hell to tempt him to evil.
The King and Queen enlist Hamlet’s old friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to try to find out why Hamlet is acting so crazy. Meanwhile, his girlfriend Ophelia has been instructed by her father, Polonius, to stop seeing Hamlet. Hamlet decides to try to verify the ghost’s story by having players perform a play like the murder of his father for the King and Queen. Claudius’ reaction to the play confirms the Ghost’s story. Hamlet is quickly summoned to his mother’s room where she has Polonius hide behind the curtains to over hear her conversation with Hamlet. Hamlet hears someone behind the curtain and stabs Polonius, believing that he is killing the king. Claudius decides to send Hamlet to England along with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern who are bearing letters with instructions for England to kill Hamlet.
Meanwhile, Polonius’ son Laertes returns to Denmark to revenge his Father’s death. Upon the news of her father’s murder, Ophelia goes mad and later drowns herself. On hearing that Hamlet never made it to England and will be returning, Claudius and Laertes create a plan for Hamlet’s death. They will encourage Hamlet to have a sporting fencing match with Laertes. However Laertes will leave the end of his sword unbated (uncovered) and he will put poison on it so that the slightest scratch will kill Hamlet. Hamlet agrees to the fencing match. During the fight, Hamlet and Laertes become aggressive and both are mortally wounded. Gertrude unknowingly drinks from a poisoned glass of wine intended for Hamlet and dies. Laertes asks forgiveness of Hamlet and reveals that King Claudius is to blame. Hamlet stabs Claudius and forces him to drink the rest of the poisoned wine. Hamlet succumbs to his wounds and dies. Horatio is left to bury the dead.Buy Tickets
