Shakespeare & Company receives Kresge Foundation $800,000 Challenge Grant

{Lenox, Mass}—On the strength of a widespread showing of support from the community, Shakespeare & Company has just received an $800,000 challenge grant from the . The funds were released after the Company raised an additional $1.5 million bringing its $10 million Capital Campaign, launched at its 30th Anniversary Gala in May 2007, to a successful conclusion. The centerpiece of the Campaign has been the creation of the Bernstein Center for the Performing Arts, a production center including state of the art rehearsal studios, new scene and property shops, and the Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre.

The push to meet the Kresge challenge was embraced by the patrons of the Company’s record-breaking 2009-2010 season, who rose to the occasion to make gifts both large and small. The Kresge challenge provoked unprecedented financial support from first-time donors: over 900 individuals contributed to the effort, including 400 first-time donors to S&Co.

“Our friends in the community stood by us when we needed them most. On behalf of Shakespeare & Company’s trustees, overseers, and staff, I want to thank everyone who pitched in and gave us their support, allowing us to reach this milestone. Our relationship, as an organization, with generations of students, students of acting, and lovers of theatre is truly a remarkable one. S&Co.’s mission at its core is a community endeavor, and that is borne out by the support that enabled us to receive this Kresge challenge grant.  We couldn’t have done this without the strong leadership and tireless efforts of long-time trustees and Campaign Co-Chairs, Michael A. Miller and Dorothy Weber,” said , chairman of S&Co.’s board of trustees. Continue reading ‘Shakespeare & Company receives Kresge Foundation $800,000 Challenge Grant’

Thank you for a record-breaking 2009-10 Season!

Our 2009-2010 Season—Shakespeare & Company’s longest ever—wrapped up last weekend with the final performances of Les Liaisons Dangereuses. We are happy to announce that, thanks to you, we hosted more patrons this season than ever before! We surged past our previous attendance record and issued over 50,000 tickets. Along the way, we also finished just short of last year’s all-time record for box office revenue!

The 2009-10 included eighteen full productions plus a host of special events, beginning with Romeo and Juliet in May 2009 and winding down last weekend. Shakespeare & Company issued 50,446 tickets this season, surging past its previous record by some three thousand patron visits. The box office revenue totaled $1.13 million, fewer than three thousand dollars short of S&Co.’s record, set during the 2008-2009 season.

Everyone at Shakespeare & Company says “thank you” to you, our patrons and friends in the community, for making this possible. Your overwhelming support is the biggest and most important seal of approval we can receive. With another great season just around the corner (and special presentations like Shakespeare and the Language that Shaped a World still ongoing), we look forward to seeing you again sometime soon!

In the News: Les Costumes Magnifiques!

Working behind the scenes, Shakespeare & Company Costume Director “has saved seemingly every belt, buckle, blouse, coat, hat, petticoat, shoe and trouser that has ever been worn on stage at S&Co” since 1980.

Now she enters the spotlight in this article from Rural Intelligence about her work as Costume Designer for the current production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses:

One of the challenges of designing Liaisons was its location in the smaller Bernstein Theatre where the actors are literally inches away from the audience, so there could be no sleight of hand. “I couldn’t use zippers, for instance, because they’re not period,” she says…Indeed, authenticity is key to Lohbauer’s philosophy. “Lizzie Aspenlieder wears a full corset,” she says. “The actors wore panniers [the wire contraptions that create exaggerated hips] since day one of rehearsal.”

In the News: ‘Liaisons’ tailored to dark times

Les Liaisons Dangereuses cast members , and director are featured in this article in Albany’s Times Union which ran today:

Shakespeare eventually brings out the bawdy in everybody, but this winter the troupe is going even further, tackling Christopher Hampton’s popular adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 classic, “Les Liaisons Dangereuses,” at the intimate Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre.

It’s a peppery play stuffed with filled-out corsets, sexual intrigue and just a little old-fashioned cruelty.

“It’s just right for the cold weather,” director says with a hearty laugh. “Just when you’ve had enough of mud and snow you think, let’s go see a bit of sex and color down at the Bernstein.”
