7 Questions with Timothy Douglas

timdouglas.jpg In his eighth season at Shakespeare & Company, Timothy Douglas, a prolific director, steps back onto the stage (after directing Blue/Orange last summer) to play the King of France in All’s Well That Ends Well (Buy tickets now). Tim will also teach voice in the Shakespeare & Young Company summer session.

1. How did you come to be with Shakespeare & Company?

I first heard about the Company through my voice teachers, Zoe Alexander and Virginia Ness, when I was training as an actor at Yale Drama School. My first audition out of grad school was for Tina Packer’s 1986 production of Antony and Cleopatra. I was cast as the Soothsayer and the Clown (who brings the snake).

Cornets and Summer Stars: Shakespeare & Company’s 31st Season Gala Celebration

Shakespeare & Company celebrates its 31st Season with a very special Cornets & Summer Stars Gala, on Saturday, June 28th to benefit the Company’s thriving Education Program. The event will include scenes and snippets of song, dance and revelry from Shakespeare’s All’s Well That Ends Well. Guests shouldn’t be surprised if a swaggering courtier or saucy lady-in-waiting greets them over the course of this festive and entertaining night.

Individual Gala tickets are priced at $300, $500, and $1,000. Tables seating ten guests may also be reserved for $3,000 or $5,000. All proceeds will benefit our acclaimed Education Program. Gala Chair Jane Iredale returns for the second consecutive year to host another exciting evening showcasing the Company’s deep wealth of creative talents, which will be on full display throughout the Gala evening. Associate Artistic Director Michael Hammond is orchestrating the evenings entertainments prepared especially for the event where critically-acclaimed Artistic Director Tina Packer will be on-hand to celebrate with excerpts from this season’s production of Shakespeare’s comedy All’s Well That Ends Well, which opens June 20th in Founders’. Excerpts from the play will feature some of the Company’s youngest actors (7-10yr olds) from the Riotous Youth program, teenagers from Shakespeare & Young Company, and more ‘seasoned’ veteran actors will perform scenes and songs from the show.

A Shakespeare & Young Company Triumph!

syco_051108easp_277sized.jpg Founders’ Theatre was buzzing all weekend as the spring session of Shakespeare & Young Company presented four performances. Hundreds of friends, family and members of the general public came to support and praise these twenty-five young actors. Check out the photos of their performances of The Law, Marina, Denmark, and Brave New World, directed by Jonathan Croy and Michael F. Toomey.

Shakespeare & Young Company Performs This Weekend

Shakespeare & Young Company 2007Shakespeare & Young Company is where students age 16-20 can begin or continue their actor training. The Spring Session of S&YCo involves 25 participants who tackle the scenes, which have been culled from several of Shakespeare’s plays, and revolve around a particular theme.

Headed by Youth Programs Director Jonathan Croy and co-directed with Company actor Michael F. Toomey, Shakespeare scenes for the Spring Session of S&YCo include excerpts from Pericles, The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest and Hamlet. Marina follows her story from Pericles, Brave New World is a distillation of The Tempest, Denmark explores the tragedy of Hamlet, and The Law is a compilation of Shakespeare scenes revolving around justice.

S&YCo performances are at 7:30pm this Saturday May 10 and Sunday May 11, with tickets available for $12 for adults and $8 for students.  Please call the Box Office at (413) 637-3353 or visit the Shakespeare & Company website at www.shakespeare.org for information and to reserve your tickets.
