EXAMINE. REFLECT. ANALYZE. Lead.Intellectual Renewal for Leaders
October 30 to November 2, 2008 An Intellectual Renewal for Leaders Seminar opens with a discussion on the nature of humanity with a selection from Plato, followed by considerations of equality, through the words of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Virginia Wolfe and Eleanor Roosevelt. In a natural progression, the conversation explores a leader’s relationship to followers, with readings from Fyodor Dostoevsky and Aung San Suu Kyi. A play on the mainstage of Shakespeare & Company leads to an analysis of leadership and ideology. Discussion then shifts to leadership and opposition, with the words of Martin Luther King, Walter Lippman, or Nicolo Machiavelli; followed by the risks and tradeoffs of leadership, with thoughts from Ronald Heifetz and Jean Lipman-Blumen. Leadership and the demands of community are based on Nelson Mandela, Esther Dyson or Italo Calvino. Women’s voices from Shakespeare’s world illuminate the progress of the last four hundred years and the essence of the feminine. Vaclav Havel and Henry David Thoreau bring the conversation around to one’s own leadership as seminar participants prepare to take what they have experienced and absorbed back into their own lives and fields of action. “I really resonated with the complex journey that leads from thought to action and regard this Arden philosophy as a central, energizing feature of the seminars.” – Arden participant
