Shakespeare & Company operates year-round in the Berkshires, scheduling hundreds of performances on our indoor and outdoor stages, scores of workshops, multiple lectures and demonstrations, and literally thousands of classes for professional and aspiring actors, teachers, and directors.
Inspired by Shakespeare's theaters-where everybody was close to the action; our air-conditioned, scaffold-and-canvas theatre, places audiences on all sides of the stage (in the round) and on two levels. With box seats and comfortable armless, cushion-backed benches the Playhouse seats over 400. Amenities include an indoor bar and lobby, concessions, and restrooms. The theatre is wheelchair accessible.
This versatile and intimate stage space, 70 feet by 35 feet, seats 200, with four distinct seating configurations for stage presentations and events. The space is highly adaptable and flexible, depending on the creative needs of our performances and event. Amenities include an indoor bar and lobby, concessions, and restrooms. The theatre is wheelchair accessible.
Our tented outdoor theatre is a reconstruction of the first level of Shakespeare’s first London theatre, the Rose Playhouse. Situated on our beautiful Rose Meadow, the Theatre features bleacher seating and removable “groundling” seating for up to 250, with restrooms nearby in Josie’s Place Cafe.
Three state-of-the-art theatrical studios, located in the Bernstein, can double as performance spaces. Each room is equipped with lighting grids (at 15′ 9½”) with 400 amp stage lighting. Sprung floors are on neoprene pads, which make the airy rooms particularly suitable for dance, yoga and other physical movement.
